Acupuncture is useful to alleviate or completely remove symptoms of any condition from pain to autoimmune disease to women’s health issues.
During your first visit your acupuncturist will take your medical history and complete a full consultation including medical evaluation and treatment plan. Then the acupuncturist will needle the patient and needles will be retained for 30-45 minutes. The entire visit will be 1-2 hours. Follow-up appointments are 1 hour.
Every patient’s condition is different. Each patient will be evaluated in their initial consultation and an individual treatment plan will be discussed. The amount of treatments required to see results and recovery is based on the length of time the patient has been living with the symptoms and the severity and complexity of the case. Acute conditions may be treated in 3-6 sessions while chronic conditions could take 10-12 or more sessions.
Acupuncturists use fine needles that are approximately 1/20th of the size of a Intravenous needle. They do not hurt. Occasionally the patient will feel a strong sensation upon needling due the strength of the affect of the acupuncture point. However, most patients are very relaxed during the treatment and often fall asleep.
Acupuncturists are highly educated in the anatomy of the human body and are well trained to conduct treatments around the internal structures of the body. However, due to the fact that every human is not made exactly the same, there is a rare chance a nerve can be hit by a needle. If this happens you will quickly notice a nerve stimulus and let your acupuncturist know so they can remove the needle. Upon removal you will not feel pain. On the very rare occasion that a nerve is hit, you do not need to worry as it will not cause lasting damage to your nerves.
It is best to eat a normal sized meal one hour before acupuncture. It is not ideal to receive a treatment without eating beforehand. It is also not advised to receive acupuncture treatments after consuming alcohol and/or drugs.
You should bring or wear loose fitting clothing that can easily roll up or exposes your limbs. Acupuncture often involves treatment in areas that are away from the area of pain or where the condition lies.
